30/70 is an organization that could not have existed before the information age. A networked collaboration of designers from around the world coming from the fields of music, sound design, opera, theater, film, web design, interactivity, programming, video art, and creative management. We excel in making one-of-a-kind projects for public space. Seeing is believing, see what I mean, sight unseen....As our eyes become increasingly tired in 70-percent visual 30-percent "other" world, 30-70 reverses the perceptual mix with projects bass hearing perspective of the world we live in.
Vault Grooves
This disc is made entirely of sounds from musical instruments collected by Chicago's Field Museum over the last 100 years. These instruments have been collected and conserved as artifacts for scientific use, which under normal circumstances means they are never to be played. For a millennial exhibition called Sounds from the Vaults, Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger re-explored the Museum's vast collections, searching for the most unusual and rich sounding objects. From over 6,000 musical instruments, they eventually chose 50 as their virtual orchestra - to be displayed in the exhibition and played digitally by visitors. Many of these sounds have not been heard for 100 years, and a few archeological artifacts for perhaps a thousand years.
